Website Design
Do I really need a website?
YES! With today's world of technology the only way to get the word out fast is to have a presence on the world wide web. Readers like being able to communicate with authors, other readers, anyone that share the same interests. To create a buzz about yourself the best thing you can do is create a community all about you! Share yourself with your readers and word will spread quickly. With a click of a link, you can connect to thousands of people a day. When you have your own website, it must be updated. Find a person you can trust to keep up on your information or just do it yourself. There is a lot of self-help tutorials on the web to help you understand how to create your own site.
What should I have on my web site?
The most basic information to have on your site is your already published books, coming soon and works in progress. I don't know how many times I have visited an authors site to find out when their next book is coming out or if they have a series and the information is not on the site. Nothing worse than going to a website that has outdated or missing information.
Why do I need all of these sites?
Websites - A website does not have to maintained as often as a blog. It is used for information about books, upcoming releases, new information, etc. The website is not for communication but information. Readers like to find information about authors, past books, coming works, and where to buy their books. It is also a way to share other authors too by linking to their sites.
Blog - Blogs are a great tool for authors to chat with and share information with their readers. A definate marketing tool for authors. Blogs must be kept up to date and maintained weekly at least if not daily. It is a way for the reader to touch base with the author but also a way for the author to connect with readers. Contests, marketing, and communication is the key.
Facebook - Defiantely a must have. Facebook has grown so much over the last few years, even though they have need for new servers and whatnot, they are a great tool to communicate and connect with readers, authors and publishers. You can have a personal facebook and a seperate account for your author information. I recommend that as you don't want to share personal information with your readers.
Twitter - From my research the only thing Twitter does is let you send a sentance through your cell phone or their site about what you are doing. People can follow you on your Twitter as a friend, but no pages to set up, no information about books unless you type it in using short setences. The amount of information on one Twitter is not very much, but if you want to use it, go for it. Do not turn down a chance to share information about your books.
We will not say use so and so for you web person or company, that is a personal choice. So how do you find a good, reliable person or company?
On the Internet! Not on Google as that will lead to overwhelming choices and no one you will know. Go to other authors and friends sites and check out who created their site. There is usually a link to the person or company web site and you can check them out further. Just remember, it doesn't matter what other people like, the site is about you and a reflection of your creativity. If you are not pleased with what is produced, you have to option to keep going until you find a site you LOVE.
What if there isn't a link?
Ask the owner of the site who they use. Question the web design company or person just like you are going to hire someone to watch your kids. That is how precious your website should be.
What else do I need to promote my books or site on the Internet?
A blog, join Facebook, Twitter, all kinds of Yahoo! & Google groups. To find information about each of these sites, visit their sites or talk to other authors about their experiences.
Sign up with different review sites and establish a relationship. Why? Because this is where a reader may first hear of you as an author or one of your books. You want to make sure you are connected in the huge world of the internet to get your name, books, information to as many people as possible.
